Iron Pyrite

General Application

Iron pyrite increases thermal conductivity when used as an active filler in pressed, resin-bonded grinding and cut-off wheels, brake pads, and other friction applications. This increase in thermal conductivity improves the durability of organic bonded abrasives.

  • Balances the hardness/friction coefficient of brake pads
  • Can be used alone or with other active fillers
  • Increases efficiency of grinding
  • Lowers pressure and heat variations
  • Also applicable to free steel cutting

Specifications

Finely-grained pyrite with a high sulphur content desirable for abrasive applications.

  • Sulphur: 47%-55%
  • Iron: 44%-47%
  • Particle size: 200 mesh all pass
  • Prepared specifically for abrasive industry

General Information

Iron pyrite, known commonly as “fool’s gold,” is brass yellow and highly lustrous. It is the most common sulphide and occurs in small quantities in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks all over the world.

Gold often occurs alongside or inside pyrite. Gold ore is the most important use of iron pyrite. While it contains iron and sulphur, iron pyrite does not provide a significant source of either. Sulphur is produced from pyrite during gold production, though most sulphur production today is a by-product of oil and gas processing.
